Rainbow QuarterThe independent guide to gay Blackpool

Zoe

Long-serving Funny Girls DJ and hostess, known for her quick-fire audience banter.

DJ and hostess

The act

Zoe is a DJ, compère and hostess rather than a production-number queen. Her job is the bit of the night that makes or breaks it: warming up the room, steering the music, teasing the hen parties, reading out the birthdays and keeping the energy up between the big routines. She is known for quick-fire banter with the audience, and generations of Funny Girls visitors remember her more than any single number in the show. When asked to sum up the venue for its 25th birthday, she called it bright, colourful and fun, just like Blackpool, which is not a bad description of Zoe herself.

She also takes to the stage in full costume. Photographs of Funny Girls finales show her in the line-up with the headline queens, in towering headdresses and sequins.

Career highlights

  • The Flamingo. Zoe started out as a young DJ at the Flamingo, the Talbot Road club that launched Blackpool's gay scene in 1979.
  • Funny Girls from day one. She has been DJ and compère at Funny Girls since the show opened on Queen Street in July 1994, and was there on opening night alongside Betty Legs Diamond.
  • New shows. In 1999 she fronted a new Wednesday show at Funny Girls with fellow performer Lionel Vinvyl.
  • Headliner. By the 2010s she was co-headlining the main Funny Girls show with Betty Legs Diamond, from Wednesday to Sunday through the summer seasons.
  • 25 and 30 years. She was still appearing nightly when Funny Girls marked its 25th anniversary in 2019, and she was named among the long-serving stars when the venue reached 30.
  • On film. Zoe is one of the interviewees in Queering Blackpool, the 2025 documentary on the town's drag and LGBTQ+ history, which premiered at the start of Pride weekend.
  • Together Again. In 2026 she reunited with Betty Legs Diamond for Together Again at the Central Pier Show Bar.
