The Flying Handbag
A big, purpose-built LGBTQ+ bar and club on Queen Street, open from noon every day with drag hosts, karaoke, food and a sun terrace.
The Queen Street bar whose building became Kaos.
Permanently closed
Before Kaos, the building at 38–42 Queen Street was home to the Trades Bar, one of the street's gay bars. The Trades name is still familiar on the scene because of the long-running men-only Trades Hotel on Lord Street, which has its own residents' bar, but the Queen Street bar was a separate place in the heart of the strip.
In the 2010s the Queen Street premises were refitted and relaunched as Kaos, a gay bar and late-night club with an industrial look, a metal dancefloor and music from the 1980s onwards. Kaos had its own ups and downs, closing for a spell before new owners gave it a full refurbishment in 2026 and reopened it that July with glitterballs and neon rainbows.
Kaos is open today. If you drank in the old Trades Bar, the address is the same and the music is still loud. Times and details can change, so check before you go.
