The Illuminations and the gay quarter

How to combine Blackpool's famous light show with a night in the Rainbow Quarter: dates, nightly times, the best viewing routes from Queen Street, and tips for busy autumn weekends.

Why they go together

The Illuminations run along the whole Promenade, and the Rainbow Quarter is a three-minute walk from it. That makes an Illuminations weekend one of the best times to visit: you can see the lights at dusk, then be in a drag bar by the time the show starts. From September to early January the quarter's bars are busier, and the town has a festive, late-season buzz.

The 2026–27 season

  • Dates. The 2026 Illuminations switched on on Friday 4 September and run every night until Sunday 3 January 2027.
  • The route. Around six miles of lights, festoons, tableaux and interactive features from Starr Gate in the south to Red Bank Road at Bispham.
  • Cost. Free. Donations are collected at points along the Promenade by cash or card.

What time are they on?

The lights come on at dusk and switch off at about 10.30pm on most nights, staying on until midnight on many Friday and Saturday nights in the autumn. As the evenings get darker, switch-on moves earlier:

  • Early to mid October: on at around 7pm.
  • Late October into November: on from about 5.30pm, then 5pm.
  • Mid-December to early January: on from 4.30pm.
  • Late nights: in October and early November, Fridays and Saturdays run until midnight. From late November to mid-December, late Fridays and Saturdays end at 11pm.
  • New Year's Eve: the lights stay on until 12.30am.

Seeing the lights from the quarter

On foot, the short loop (45 minutes). Walk down Queen Street to the Promenade, turn south past North Pier and the tourist information centre to the Tower and the Comedy Carpet, then come back up Talbot Road. This takes in the lights closest to the quarter and the installations on the Tower Festival Headland, which are best seen up close.

By tram, the long view. Hop on a tram at North Pier, or at Blackpool North station if a tram is calling there. Ride north to Bispham for the animated tableaux, the "big pictures", then ride back. On busy evenings, you'll get a better view from the tram than from a car.

Heritage tram tours. Illuminated heritage trams run special tours of the lights in season. One tram used for these tours has a wheelchair lift.

By car. You can drive the route, but on Saturdays traffic crawls. If you drive, go midweek, and travel north to south at weekends to avoid the worst queues.

Tips for an Illuminations weekend

  • Book accommodation early. Autumn Saturdays are some of the busiest nights of the year, and many guesthouses set minimum stays.
  • Go midweek if you want to avoid crowds.
  • See the lights first, then go out. The lights come on early in the evening, which leaves time for dinner, Funny Girls and the bars afterwards.
  • Wrap up warm. The Promenade is exposed and the wind off the sea is cold in autumn.
  • Tram changes. In the evenings during the Illuminations, trams have not always served the Blackpool North station stop. If no tram is due, walk down Talbot Road to North Pier.
  • Accessible viewing. If walking is hard, head for the tableaux at the northern end, which pack the most into a short stretch.

What's on in the quarter during the lights

  • Funny Girls runs a Halloween show in the early autumn, special nights in early November, and its Christmas show from mid-November to early January.
  • Halloween brings themed nights to bars across the quarter.
  • Christmas by the Sea opens on the Tower Festival Headland in late November, with an ice rink, rides and food and drink. Entry is free.
  • New Year's Eve in the quarter, with the lights on until after midnight.

Lights in the quarter itself

The council's plan for the Rainbow Quarter includes borrowing the town's lighting expertise for feature lighting on the quarter's own streets, alongside the new lighting columns already installed. Keep an eye out for new installations in future seasons.
