LGBT-inclusive GPs, colleges and charities in Blackpool
Blackpool GP surgeries, colleges and charities that hold or are working towards the county's LGBT inclusion quality mark.
Lancashire LGBT runs a long-standing LGBT inclusion quality mark for organisations. To earn it, an organisation reviews its policies, trains its staff and works through an action plan to make sure LGBT people get a fair and welcoming service. Several Blackpool organisations hold it.
GP practices
A group of town-centre GP practices, in the same primary care network, has worked towards the mark:
- Adelaide Street Family Practice (incorporating Harris Medical Centre), Adelaide Street. Full quality mark, 2022.
- St Paul's Medical Centre, Dickson Road, in the Rainbow Quarter. Full quality mark, 2022.
- South King Street Medical Centre, South King Street. Full quality mark, 2022.
- Glenroyd Medical Practice, with surgeries in central and north Blackpool. Holder (level not stated).
- Elizabeth Street Surgery, Elizabeth Street. Working towards the mark.
Colleges
- Blackpool and The Fylde College and Blackpool Sixth Form College were the first further education colleges in Lancashire to earn the mark, in 2021. Both have LGBT+ student groups. Ask student services how to join.
Charities and youth services
- Empowerment, an advocacy charity helping people across Blackpool and the Fylde coast have their voices heard.
- UR Potential, which runs LGBT youth groups across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
- Renaissance UK, the charity behind Horizon LGBTQ+.
What it means for you
Choosing a quality-mark GP won't change your NHS care, but it can make it easier to talk openly about your sexuality, gender identity or sexual health. You can only register with a practice whose area covers your address, so check with the surgery.
Award levels change over time, so ask the organisation about its current status if it matters to you.
