Mermaids is a national charity that supports trans, non-binary and gender-diverse children and young people, and their families. It isn't based in Blackpool, but its helpline and web chat are open to anyone in the UK.

What they offer

  • A support line for young people who are exploring their gender identity.
  • Support for parents, carers and families who want to understand and help.
  • Web chat if talking on the phone feels like too much.

When to call

  • Monday and Wednesday: 10.30am to 6pm.
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 1pm to 8.30pm.

Local help in Blackpool

  • UR Potential runs LGBT youth groups across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre, including a group just for trans young people, and a family support group. Call 01253 344398.
  • Youtherapy offers free NHS counselling for 11 to 25-year-olds, with a weekly drop-in on Talbot Road.
  • Transparent is a monthly meet-up in Blackpool for parents of trans people.
  • The Gender Outreach Service has a free monthly drop-in at Blackpool Central Library for people on, or thinking about, the gender identity clinic pathway.

Good to know

Mermaids' line isn't an emergency service. If a young person is in immediate danger, call 999. If they need to talk to someone right now, outside Mermaids' hours, Samaritans are free on 116 123, day and night.
