The Flying Handbag
A big, purpose-built LGBTQ+ bar and club on Queen Street, open from noon every day with drag hosts, karaoke, food and a sun terrace.
Two lounge bars from the 2000s, one on The Strand and one upstairs at Funny Girls.
Reported as closed
The first was a bar on The Strand, the short street that runs behind the Promenade near the bottom of Queen Street. It sat close to the corner where Funny Girls had first opened in 1994, and it had closed by the time Funny Girls was settled into its new home in the old Odeon.
Its replacement was Bar B, upstairs in the Funny Girls building on Dickson Road and reached by a separate entrance on the right-hand side. It had lounge areas and a pool table, but on busy nights it felt more like a club than a lounge. Resident DJs, some of whom also played at the Flamingo, made it a popular place to carry on after the show.
Neither bar trades today. Upstairs at the old Odeon there is now a separate show bar, Oscars, and the upper floors are let as a nightclub. These smaller bars were part of the reason the Funny Girls building could keep a crowd entertained from early evening until the early hours.
