Non-binary people in Blackpool

What non-binary means, local groups and clinics, unisex spaces and your rights in the UK.

Non-binary describes people whose gender isn't only man or only woman. Someone may identify with parts of both, with neither, or in another way entirely. It is both an identity in its own right and an umbrella for many others, including gender-fluid, agender and bigender. Some non-binary people consider themselves trans; some don't. Many use they/them pronouns, but not all, and non-binary people don't have to look androgynous.

Your rights in the UK

  • There is no legal non-binary gender in the UK. Passports and birth certificates show only M or F, and a Gender Recognition Certificate can only record male or female.
  • In Taylor v Jaguar Land Rover (2020) an employment tribunal found that a gender-fluid and non-binary employee was protected under the Equality Act's gender reassignment characteristic.
  • Many UK organisations let you use the gender-neutral title Mx.

See LGBTQ+ identities and UK law for sources.

Awareness dates

  • International Non-Binary People's Day: 14 July.
  • Trans Day of Visibility: 31 March.

The non-binary flag has four stripes: yellow, white, purple and black.
