Rainbow QuarterBlackpool's inclusive quarter: everyone welcome

Abingdon Street

The historic shopping street, a Be Who You Want To Be priority street, with the market and the listed old post office.

Abingdon Street is the main north-south route through the town centre and Blackpool's historic shopping street. It runs from the Central Library end, near Queen Street, down to Church Street, with a grid of streets off it; most of its main buildings date from the early 1900s.

A Be Who You Want To Be priority street

The council's Be Who You Want To Be action plan names four priority streets for better pavements, less clutter, more planting and better lighting: Queen Street, Dickson Road, Abingdon Street and Lord Street. Separately, the government's High Street Accelerator money for Blackpool is aimed at Abingdon Street and Queen Street, including new green space by the Central Library and the Grundy Art Gallery. See Be You.

On the street

  • Abingdon Street Market at 14 to 20 runs through to Edward Street. After a £3.6 million revamp it reopened in May 2023 with a food hall, coffee shop, cocktail bar and independent stalls.
  • The former General Post Office at 26 to 30 (1910) is Grade II listed, with a row of eight listed red telephone boxes in front. It closed in 2007 and the council now owns it.
  • The pedestrianised junction with Church Street, by St John's church, has views of the Tower.

LGBTQ+ history

In the 2000s Lucy's Two (earlier Lucy's Bar) at 68 to 70 Abingdon Street was a bar mainly for women, one of the few women-centred venues in town. See lost venues of the quarter.
