Rainbow QuarterBlackpool's inclusive quarter: everyone welcome

Talbot Square

Where Talbot Road meets the sea, with the Town Hall, North Pier and a tram stop.

Talbot Square is the open space at the sea end of Talbot Road, directly opposite North Pier. It forms the point of a triangle with Talbot Road, Clifton Street and Abingdon Street, and it is the natural gateway between the seafront and the Rainbow Quarter.

Landmarks

  • Blackpool Town Hall (1895 to 1900) is Grade II listed. The ship's bell of HMS Foudroyant, wrecked on Blackpool sands in 1897, was placed inside when it opened.
  • North Pier, opened in 1863 and designed by Eugenius Birch, is Blackpool's only listed pier.
  • The Grade II listed Clifton Hotel of 1875 stands on the corner of the Golden Mile, and the Counting House pub is locally listed.
  • Listed red K6 telephone boxes stand in the square.

Trams

In June 2024 trams returned to Talbot Road for the first time in 60 years. The new line leaves the Promenade at North Pier, crosses into Talbot Square and runs about 600 metres up Talbot Road to Blackpool North station. The Talbot Square stop is for trams heading into town only; more than a quarter of a million journeys were made to and from the North Station stop in its first year.

Getting here

From North Pier, cross the Promenade. From Blackpool North station, walk down Talbot Road, passing Garlands on the way, or take the tram.
