Liberty Church Blackpool
A small, openly LGBTQ+ inclusive Christian church in North Shore, with Sunday worship, a free Wednesday meal and same-sex weddings.
Just past the quarter in North Shore, home to St Paul's Worship Centre and the LGBTQ+ inclusive Liberty Church.
Egerton Road is in North Shore, just beyond the northern edge of the quarter, where it meets Pleasant Street. Dickson Road, a block away, was once called Warbreck Road.
St Paul's Worship Centre on Egerton Road (FY1 2NP) is where Liberty Church Blackpool meets: a small Christian congregation that welcomes LGBTQ+ people, marries same-sex couples and offers blessings. It holds Sunday worship at 6.30pm and a free Wednesday meal and discussion, and it is also a third-party hate crime reporting centre. Everyone is welcome; you don't need to be LGBTQ+ or a regular churchgoer.
The building has full wheelchair access and a Changing Places toilet.
St Paul's began in 1895 as a tin church seating 500. A larger church followed from 1897, with a vicarage and a church hall built at the same time. The hall housed soldiers and evacuees in the Second World War. The last service in the old church was held in 1992; since then worship has taken place in the former hall on Egerton Road. The church itself was largely demolished, but its tower survives on Dickson Road as part of St Paul's Medical Centre, a GP practice that holds the county's LGBT inclusion quality mark. The former vicarage on Egerton Road is locally listed.
Walk up Dickson Road from Blackpool North station and turn right at Pleasant Street.
